Our Programs

We are proud to offer a wide range of creative workshops each year throughout the spring, summer and fall. Led by creative professionals, our workshops are a delicate balance of instruction, group feedback, creative free time and relaxing down time.

FICTION

Our workshop leaders are all wonderful story tellers; most work in multiple forms. Many of our workshops have focused on writing fiction, both short and long forms.  Workshop leaders have included Michael Malone, Craig Nova, John Gregory Brown, Marjorie Hudson and Elizabeth Cox.

NON-FICTION

Sometimes the story is "true" but no less artful.  Workshop leaders with excellent non-fiction credentials have included David Gessner, Philip Gerard, David Payne and Rob Amberg.

VISUAL ARTS

Some stories are sung, and great songs tell stories.  Workshop leaders have included Pierce Pettis, Kate Campbell and Tom Kimmel.  Evening song circles showcase each day's work.

SELF-GUIDED

Doe Branch Ink also functions as a fully-catered venue for self-organized retreats, workshops and conferences. Check out our “Host your Own” Retreat page to learn more.

Doe Branch Ink is located on 110 acres nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains 30 miles north of Asheville in Madison County — “The Jewel of the Blue Ridge”.   We offer visitors experiences of several kinds: in the late spring and early fall, we organize facilitated workshops for 6 to 8 guests with successful artists in residence who are also proven teachers.  Workshops are offered in both week-long and weekend formats.   At other times of the year, our guest house is available to rent for individual writers’ residencies or writing groups , both short and long-term, or for other artists suited to our setting.

Our Location

DSC01152.jpg

Part of an historic homestead of nearly 125 acres, the property includes walking trails and many beautiful spots for reflection in shady rhododendron forests or along spring fed streams that flow into the French Broad River, a protected national scenic waterway and a haven for whitewater rafters and kayakers. Just six miles off the main highway, the setting is a hundred years removed from the daily stresses of city life.

Our participants have come from near and far:  California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina,  South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Washington, DC — and Qatar!.   The area is close to major interstate highways I-40 and I-26, and there is airline service to Asheville, with rental cars available.  Neighbors have also used the airports in Spartanburg, SC and the Tri-City Airport in Tennessee (serving Johnson City, among others).
